EVENTS

Godfrey Daniels

While the Bethlehem venue is currently closed, archived concerts are available on Facebook @GodfreyDaniels76, and more music is coming your way weekly with Live From Godfrey Daniels on WDIY. Dina Hall and Dave Fry share short sets of archived shows from Godfrey’s 43-year history along with album cuts from Godfrey’s artists past, present, and future. It is a mix of live and pre-recorded music, with occasional interviews, and commentary on upcoming shows. The program features songwriters, acoustic bands, instrumental masters, blues and bluegrass groups, and more, all recorded in the unique atmosphere of Godfrey’s intimate listening room.

ArtsQuest

Artsquest is continuing to provide the Lehigh Valley with quality activities through ArtsQuest@home. The digital event series keeps the community connected to the arts virtually. Check out the link at artsquest.org/athome/#visualarts for Steel Stacks concerts being broadcast on SECTV, Star Wars Storytime, and other events updated frequently. Here’s an example of their offerings under the “Other Cool Stuff We Found” section at the bottom of the page: Watch Astronauts Reading Stories in Space It’s exactly what it sounds like—astronauts on various missions in space read popular children’s books while floating about, and the videos are edited and shared with kids way down on Earth. The results are adorable as well as educational and inspiring. Check out astronaut Kathleen Rubins reading Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty, and try not to get choked up at how amazing this all is. scarymommy.com

Local Band Bringing Music to Your Living Room

When forced to cancel a string of shows to help stop the spread of the pandemic, Start Making Sense—our own Bethlehem-based Talking Heads tribute band—decided to put on a live-streamed performance on March 20 that fans could view from their homes. Luckily for us, this performance with over 2 hours of music spanning the Talking Heads discography along with a few surprise covers now lives on YouTube for you to dance along in your living room. Miss going to shows at Musikfest Cafe? Their show from this past November can also be seen on YouTube in its entirety.

RECIPE

Quick Pickled Red Onions

This recipe couldn’t be any easier and is a fast and effective way to spruce up your at-home meals.

You’ll need:
A jar with a lid
1 red onion
Apple cider vinegar
Warm water
1 teaspoon salt

First, thinly slice the red onion and put the slices in the jar. Fill the jar 3/4 of the way with apple cider vinegar, and the rest of the way with warm water. Sprinkle in the salt. Although not necessary, ideas for add-ins include minced garlic, sliced jalapeño, maple syrup, sugar, spices—or whatever else you think might work. Get creative! Mix everything together in the jar. Close the jar and let rest on your counter at room temperature for 30 minutes, then refrigerate and enjoy 1–2 hours later. This delicious and nutritious condiment goes great in salads and on sandwiches, burgers, and tacos, and will last in your refrigerator for 3–4 weeks.
