Letter from the Editor

Dear Readers,

I spent every summer of my childhood at what we referred to as “camp,” in the Adirondacks.  “Camp” is actually a rustic community of cottages tucked away on Lake Champlain where my carefree days were spent swimming, water skiing and playing tennis.  As I grew older and no longer had the youthful luxury of spending an entire summer away, shy of a few short beach vacations, I’ve spent my summers at home in the Lehigh Valley.  Between the many festivals and fairs, al fresco dining, farmers markets, golf outings, organized runs and the endless activities for children, the Valley has plenty of summertime fun to offer.

Das Awkscht Fescht is celebrating its 49th year this summer.  Held in early August, the weekend festival is way more than just a car show.  Angela Bristow’s article highlights all of the exciting events scheduled this year at the Fescht– for the car enthusiast and the entire family.   While everyone loves an Iron Pigs game, the Pigs aren’t the only game in town.  In J.F. Pirro’s feature, he reports about the historic Limeport Stadium.  Built in 1933, the stadium still hosts more than 100 games a season and is a genuine treasure for all lovers of the game.

Nothing says summer to me like heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil from the garden.  We are lucky to live in a region flush with farms and Mary Beth Schwartz has tips from local chefs on how to compose your own “farm-to-table” meal in her article “Farm Fresh.”  If you’d rather make a reservation than a meal, Cathy Kiley’s review of Cosmopolitan in our “Good Taste” department will certainly inspire you to visit the downtown hot spot.

Finally, if running or biking or golf is your passion, check out the Corkboard (in every issue and online) for a comprehensive list of activities in which you and your family can participate.  Have fun, get some exercise and support a Lehigh Valley non-profit at the same time.

While I still occasionally long for those endless summer days at the lake, I am grateful to have such an abundance of summer activities available right here at home.

Enjoy!
